Abu Dhabi Pottery, the UAE’s first-ever modern pottery studio for pottery classes taught by Master Potter Homa Farley, has been honored as one of the UAE’s official Urban Treasures by the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi). This prestigious recognition celebrates our longstanding commitment to nurturing creativity and community through the art of pottery.
A Celebrated Tradition
On June 6, 2024, the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi was filled with excitement as 15 businesses, including Abu Dhabi Pottery, were added to the emirate’s growing list of Urban Treasures. This annual initiative, launched in 2020, recognizes establishments that have existed for two decades or more, becoming significant pillars of the community.
Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, personally presented the awards, underlining the importance of these businesses in shaping Abu Dhabi’s unique cultural identity and community spirit.
Abu Dhabi Pottery: A Legacy of Artistic Excellence
Established in 1994, Abu Dhabi Pottery has been at the forefront of pottery education in the UAE for 30 years. Under the guidance of award-winning Master Potter Homa Farley, who has also been named one of the noted 69 Glasgow School of Art Alumni, our studio has become a hub for both aspiring and experienced potters. Master Potter Homa Farley’s expertise is evident not only in her teaching but also in her incredible artwork, with pieces on permanent exhibit in three museums, showcasing the top quality she brings to her art.
Master Potter Homa Farley expressed her joy at receiving this recognition: “I feel very proud and privileged to receive this recognition after all these years of hard work. Over the years, we have taught hundreds of thousands of students. A lot of my previous students are actually here, some of them from 25 years ago, to celebrate this milestone, so it’s really an amazing feeling.”
Farley, who moved to the UAE in 1989 and raised her children here, added what she loves about living in Abu Dhabi, “More than anything, it’s the safety. You can walk in the street in the middle of the night and nobody will even bother you.”

Homa was born in Tehran, Iran where she spent her childhood and teenage years. She has lived in the UK, and currently resides between Spain and the United Arab Emirates.
